Drama
After having a marketing site that I respected puke all over me, I have decided to rethink my model. Sorry folks…some people would rather be cruel than helpful. In fact, my first thought on reading what this person had to say about the site was “why couldn’t someone who’s supposed to be a professional just email me, point out to me what they thought I was doing wrong, and perhaps I’d be inspired to change it?”.
Then I realized. “That’s because someone who would be mean spirited enough to publicly trample someone for their own good looks doesn’t really care”. Here’s the REALLY interesting part, and a good bit of advice for those of you like me out there that are attempting to learn marketing for the first time.
Be careful the people you step on today, they might be connected to the butt you’ll have to kiss tomorrow!
Why might I say that? Because if the person that shamed me so publicly knew who I was, or checked the masthead at Entrepreneur Media for the past few years, they would rethink the whole thing. In fact, I remember sitting in a board room as the executive IT director with my good friend and former boss Ryan Shea, Peter Shea, and even Gerry (of Entrepreneur Press) and using this person’s excellent blog form and great content as a “pro” to pushing their book deal through. Ironic yes? That is why my second thought was “perhaps I’ll drop a line to my friends, and we’ll just see about it”. Then I realized, if someone thinks they are a 900 pound gorilla, and jumps all over a little guy they had better be right. This is the kind of karma that can come back to you and bite you in the butt BIG TIME.
So, perhaps part 4 should be: “Be careful what you say. Pick your battles wisely”. However, in the end I just decided it is best to just let it go and move on. Try to learn from it, and realize that there might have been more to the “stupid” part of that person’s URL than they thought there was when they wrote the post condemning this site. Besides, if you get in the habit of calling people scum when you don’t even know them, your days are pretty well numbered anyway.
